Distinguishing between fine ventricular fibrillation (VF) and asystole relies on identifying residual electrical activity on the tracing, which may be masked by inadequate monitor gain. While asystole represents the total absence of electrical activity, fine VF presents low-amplitude oscillations that, if ignored, prevent early defibrillation.

Why does monitor gain affect reading?

Monitor gain defines the device's sensitivity in representing voltage. A gain set to low values can transform low-amplitude VF into an almost flat isoelectric line, simulating asystole. Observe the tracing on the simulator: small variations in the baseline may be the only evidence of a shockable rhythm.

What are the steps to confirm the rhythm?
